Mumbai Gallery Weekend (MGW) began in 2012 as a collaborative initiative by the city’s leading contemporary art galleries. The aim was to inject fresh energy into the art scene in Mumbai. This art-focused weekend has, over the last six years, become one of the most valuable fixtures in Mumbai’s cultural calendar. The scope of MGW has evolved over time to include new galleries and cultural spaces. The endeavour however, has remained the same – to bring together potential art collectors and enthusiasts in order to broaden the reach and relevance of contemporary art.

About Mumbai Gallery Weekend (MGW)

  • MGW is an initiative started in 2012 by nine of the then leading contemporary art galleries of Mumbai
  • Over the last six years, every year, MGW’s primary objective has been to touch the hearts and minds of existing and potential art collectors and enthusiasts across a variety of fields, including industry, finance, and media in order to broaden the reach and relevance of contemporary art
  • By engaging the two key strategies of art exhibitions and art conversations, MGW is able to extend the traditional reach of galleries, creating a festive and engaging environment for regular visitors to galleries, and an approachable public program for new visitors
  • Events held include lectures by art historians, museum professionals, and artists. MGW has also included artist led walkthroughs at participating galleries and collateral partners. The event has grown every year to include more partners, and evolved to engage a wider audience every year. Each year has also seen spectacular opening and closing events across the city
  • Partnerships with like-minded individuals and corporates have been, and continue to be an integral part of MGW’s long term plan to create value for the sponsor by engaging a variety of key decision makers in the art world as well as across industries and High Net worth Individuals (HNIs) with contemporary art

Audience Profile

  • MGW has seen audiences of up to five thousand people across the galleries during events including a number of the city’s cultural and business influencers
